Urchaagam has almost the same story outline as the recent, much more high-profile
Satham Podaathey . But bad timing is not its only problem. Satham Podaathey
itself was no classic but Urchaagam can't even boast of the popular stars or great music
that Vasanth's film had. That, coupled with a screenplay that gets more ridiculous by the minute in
the second half, make it a disaster.
Ganesh(Nandha) sees Jensi(Sherin) in Velankanni and its love at first sight for him. He sees her again
back home in Chennai and after a few obstacles, they become good friends. But just when he is ready to
express his love, Jensi reveals that she is soon to be engaged to Nicholas(Dinesh Lamba), a rich businessman
settled in the UK. To no one's surprise, Nicholas turns out to be a near-psychotic, obsessive man and
getting away from him is not so easy for Jensi.
As Dinesh reveals his psychotic tendencies, obsesses over Sherin and harasses and pursues her while
she turns to Nandha for help, it is impossible to not remember Satham Podaathey (Urchaagam
even recycles some scenes directly from Sleeping with the Enemy, which probably served as
the inspiration for Satham Podaathey too). The same 3 characters are in play here also but
they are not interesting or likeable enough for us to develop a rooting interest in them. Nandha's
character is particularly poorly fleshed out and so his whole act of hiding his love for the sake of
friendship doesn't make a big impression.
From the point where Dinesh realizes that he has lost Sherin and tries to get her back, the movie begins
a downward spiral from which it never recovers. Gaping holes in logic mark almost every single scene
and every narrative turn raises a large number of questions that the movie never makes an attempt to
answer. A character is murdered in a popular, busy hospital with no one witnessing it or even suspecting
anything and a cemetery is made to resemble a crowded marketplace with people walking around aimlessly,
just for the sake of some weak action. Compared to this, Satham Podaathey's second half was a
masterpiece of plotting and suspense!
Nandha goes the strong and silent route here, limiting himself to clipped sentences and short threats.
He hasn't really developed an image for himself yet and so this change doesn't make a big difference.
But he seems more comfortable with the fight sequences than he did in Agaram
and so the action hero role can't be completely ruled out for him yet. Sherin looks good here with
the new curls and the slightly slimmed down body. But nothing has changed as far as her acting goes
and the emotional scenes bring out her limitations. Glamor has been her selling point since her debut
in Thulluvadho Ilamai but she is covered up for the most part here and her fans have to wait
for the last duet to see her glamorous side. Dinesh Lamba has a face suited for the villain's role
and manages to earn our disgust with his actions. Ranjit Barot's songs are quite catchy but the
picturization doesn't do them justice. Though not upto the level of the VIP soundtrack, the songs
do make us wonder why the music director didn't compose songs for any other movie after that.
