With the state elections coming up in TamilNadu, Sudhesi is supposed to be a thinly-veiled propaganda
machine for Vijayakanth, who has floated his own party. He does appear to have a good, even if Utopian,
agenda for the people if he comes to power. Unfortunately, he is trying to convey the agenda through a
really bad movie.
Narayanan(Shayaji Shinde) has become the leader of his political party and the state's CM through rather
dubious means. His right-hand man is Ragavachari(Krishna), who advises him on all matters. When
Sudhesi(Vijayakanth) gets involved in their plots through a CD with some rather incriminating evidence,
he uses the opportunity to do some good for the people.
Sudhesi seems to exist in a world of its own and none of the scenes have even a touch of realism(and
I am not talking about just the gravity-defying stunt sequences either). The scenes are mounted in an extremely
amateurish manner with no subtlety or restraint whatsoever. We have scenes like Vijayakanth walking casually
into the Chief Minister's house posing as a CBI officer and the CM personally detonating a bomb to kill his
political opponent. Vijayakanth probably intended his movie and its message to reach everyone but does that
mean that the film has to be so completely dumbed down?
When a movie attempts to showcase solutions to people's troubles, the ills it addresses must be realistic
for people to understand them. That was why the segment where Vijayakanth teaches the medical fraternity
a lesson in Ramanaa was so effective. It tackled the issue of hospitals
ripping off the common man - something that happened in the real world and people could identify with. But
in keeping with the rest of the film, Sudhesi creates issues(like a school teacher sending students
home to do his housework) that are too far-fetched. Worse, it
doesn't provide the solutions until much later. So the effectiveness of the solution is diluted and it
doesn't provide the kind of exhilaration that these kind of movies usually do.
Vijayakanth's primary aim in making this movie is to make his agenda clear to the people but the movie
takes a while to get to the point where he gets a chance to present it. His plans do make some sense
and in Mudhalvan -style, we get to see exactly how his ideas make
life better for the people. This segment is the only entertaining segment in the film since it has some
nice dialogs(like Vijayakanth's monologue on what India has a lot of but is still lacking in) and paints
a nice picture of how things could be improved.
Vijayakanth looks bloated and that naturally affects his ability to perform stunts, the usual strongpoint
in his movies. He looks stiff too and doesn't deliver dialogs as forcefully as he used to. Aashima gets to
hang around until she can sing a couple of duets with him and then disappears as politics comes to the fore.
Krishna rants and raves as the CM's assistant while Shayaji Shinde is forced to exaggerate his performance
to match everyone around him. Karunas looks a little more decent than usual without his beard but his track
is just as unfunny as before.
