Perazhagan is quite a unique masala flick. Its story, revolving around a hunchback and his poor, blind lover will not be anyone's choice to develop a masala movie on. But it manages to achieve the impossible and does so in wonderful fashion. With a great, career-best performance from Surya, a strong story and romance, comedy, action and sentiments in the right measures, Perazhagan is thoroughly entertaining.

Chinna(Surya), a buck-toothed hunchback, runs an STD booth. He starts liking Senbagam(Jothika), a blind girl who earns money by singing and dancing on the streets with her brother. So, curing her blindness becomes his number one priority. Meanwhile, Karthik(Surya), a police constable's son, and Priya(Jothika), the Commissioner's daughter, who are in love, plan to run away and enlist Chinna's help. But Varadhan(Bobby), who has a score to settle with both Chinna and Karthik, upsets their plans.

The USP of the movie is obviously Chinna and his characterization turns out to be an unqualified success. Neither he nor the people around him feel sorry for him and more importantly, he never seems to be overtly trying to earn the audience's sympathy either. His interactions, whether with Vivek or with more marginal characters(like the beggar) are lively and funny and almost all his wisecracks(like his comment after his first conversation with Karthik) are right on target. At the same time, he effortlessly earns our sympathy when getting thrashed by the rowdy or worrying about Jothika's reaction to him after her eyesight is restored. None of the other characters have nearly the same impact but we hardly care about that since Chinna just carries us along.

At the same time, the movie reminds us of Aboorva Sagotharargal in the way it doesn't depend solely on the 'wow factor' for Chinna's characterization, make-up or Surya's performance. It is strong in almost all its departments and is a complete package. Its story always keeps moving and mostly in unexpected directions(I did not expect the development before the intermission even five minutes before it happens) and at the same time, manages to tie things together very cleanly at the end. Inspite of having two double roles, it cheerfully sidesteps usual plot points like mistaken identities or one person taking the place of the other. Even the romantic scenes and duets between Surya and Jothika reveal the director's wish to try something different and even though it doesn't always work(like the scene in the car), it sure keeps us engrossed.

The biggest strengths of the movie are the handling of the romance between the hunchback and the poor, blind singer and the comedy. Surya's gradual liking of Jyothika is picturised very well and his description of himself to her is endearing. The scenes they are together are always sweet and funny and the scene where they meet after her eyesight is restored is picturised wonderfully and is the perfect end to their romance. Credit for the comedy naturally goes to Vivek. After a few lacklustre movies, the comedian is back with gusto. He starts rather weakly with an ineffective sequence at a wedding and comments about handicaps that don't go over well. But he soon gets into gear and then there is no stopping him. Whether in the few separate comedy sequences (like with the man who asks him to find a woman with several specifications) or in the company of Surya, he is hilarious. The script helps him along and is filled with several funny one-liners and jabs.

Surya, who has been growing as an actor with each new movie, delivers a superb performance here. Almost unrecognizable as Chinna, he imbibes the character with just the right amount of sweetness, recklessness and self-pity. He looks great in the other role though he doesn't have much to do. Jothika looks gorgeous in the role of Priya. The role of the poor, blind girl doesn't sit quite as well on her but she manages to make us overlook the misfit with a decent performance. Bobby fits the role of the rowdy like a glove. Ambulimama... is picturised well and the duets between Surya and Jothika have some impressive set design and cinematography.
