There's a little of movies like The Truman Show and The village in Oru
Kallooriyin Kadhai since it involves manipulation by people around a person to make
him live in a make-believe world. But OKK fails to make us believe in the make-believe
world. Its characters, setting and circumstances are completely improbable and transform the
rather interesting concept into a disastrous movie.
Its a reunion five years after college ended and all the students are anxiously awaiting the
arrival of Satya, their close friend and the man behind the reunion. But they are shocked
when Satya(Arya) arrives in a catatonic state. They take him to a hypnotist who manages to
pry into his mind to reveal his love for Jyothi(Sonia Agarwal), his collegemate. He tells
Satya's friends that Satya's mind is stuck in the past and that only the expression of his
silent love for Jyothi will free his mind. So his friends decide to re-create the college of
five years ago and put Satya in its midst.
Movies set in colleges need to be realistic to work. The good ones(unfortunately, the list is
very short) strike a chord by making us relive our own days in college. OKK is another
addition to the list of bad ones but it doesn't make it to the list because of the usual
reasons. It doesn't have skimpily-clad girls or even the famous inter-college dance
competition. It is unrealistic on an even larger scale.
The film's main story aims to put friendship on a pedestal since its all about what Arya's
friends do to cure him. But the prefix to this main story essentially pushes the same
friendship off the pedestal and into a ditch because it tells us that the same close friends
had no idea about Arya's state for the last 5 years. So none of them tried to contact him in
any way at all in all those years? The flashback(near the end) that reveals what actually
happened makes even less sense. We learn that the act that caused Arya's problem happened on
the last day of college and get a ridiculous scene where his friends walk around him while he
sits zombie-like. There are no last words, no goodbyes, no exchanging of contact information, etc.
between these close friends and the next time they see Satya is after 5 years. What kind of
friends are these?!
My memory tends to be very short-term when watching a movie and I can forget about illogicalities
early in the movie if the movie turns interesting. The 're-creation' plot point is unique to
Tamil cinema and if done even reasonably well, could have made me forget what led upto it.
But thats not the case here. The canvas for the recreation here is made unreasonably large
and makes the whole thing completely unbelievable. We are expected to believe that a few
guys, in a few days, bring together all students and staff who were part of the college 5 years
ago. The logistics of such an operation are mindboggling but are arranged through a few simple
phone calls and conversations. There are ridiculous scenes like a couple of guys(who are around
Arya all the time) promising a mom that they would take care of her baby!
Once we actually get to the re-created college, the only thing that is left for the director
to make a mess of is the romance and he doesn't disappoint us. People fall in love for no
apparent reason and characters behave in contradictory ways. The climax has a brief moment
that makes sense but then proceeds to end lamely and predictably.
Arya is forced to look serious and morose all the time and Sonia gives him good company(this
might well be the college movie with the least cheerful hero and heroine). The rest of the
gang is OK though one of the friends(who was in February 14 also)
seems to be trying to follow Koundamani's route by shouting every line of dialog. Charlie,
who usually plays an old student, gets a promotion to professor but his behavior doesn't
seem any different. Kangal Kalangida... has a fast catchy tune and great lyrics
(kadandha kaalathai thiruppi thandhu kadavulai natpu vendridudhe...). That one song
takes us back to our college days more than the entire movie. Kaadhal Enbadhu... is
sung soulfully and also good but it reminds me of a song from Eeramana Rojaave.s
