After a hugely successful stage drama career, S.V.Sekhar aims higher, transferring
one of his dramas to screen for his big screen debut. Unfortunately, he fails to
make a successful transition and seems to think that a few outdoor shots and song
sequences are all that are necessary to transform a drama to the big screen. While
those who have seen his Adhirshtakkaaran drama will be bored quickly with the
scene-by-scene adaptation, those who have not are better off renting the drama itself.
Bama(Sukanya), who is scared that her greedy father would marry her off to anyone
who provides the right amount of money, decides to find herself a mate on her own.
She spots Gopalakrishnan(S.V.Sekhar) and successfully woos him. Gopalarishnan has
a domineering mother and frequent fights erupt between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law
after he marries Bama and takes her home. But some contrived situations make Bama
believe that Krishnan has several bad habits and after four strikes, she asks for
divorce, much to Krishnan's mother's delight.
S.V.Sekhar's script and dialog delivery are what have made his dramas popular
and the same is true of the big screen. Just not for as long as the movie lasts.
The first few reels pass quickly and Sekhar is successful in making us laugh quite
a bit with his numerous cracks, one-liners and 'kadi' jokes. But the routine soon
starts to get tiring. Contrived situations brought about just to insert one more
joke are not as much fun on the big screen and the lack of a strong story places
a movie on a much shakier foundation than a drama.
Sekhar struggles to shake off of his strong stage mentality and consequently there's
not much difference between seeing this movie and say, the telecast of the drama that
was the inspiration for this movie, on television. Most scenes happen indoors and
the transition from one scene to the next is abrupt (I almost expected the curtain
to come down after each scene!). The song sequences are thrust in solely to make
us remember that we are watching a movie but they are difficult to endure.
Sekhar is in his element, cracking jokes on every topic from politics to problems
in soicety. Sukanya is a pale shadow of the actress who was once one of the leading
actresses in Tamil cinema. She shows good comic timing with some of her dialogs.
Chinni Jayanth steals the few scenes he is in with his usual imitation of some
popular stars. Sriman is on hand to close out one of the tracks while Vichitra has
a meatier role than her usual one-song appearance.
