Kathir's films have exhibited a visible decrease in quality with each new entry. Both Idhayam and
Kaadhal Desam had good screenplays that helped cover up their flimsy stories.
And Kaadhalar Dhinam which missed the mark in both its story and screenplay,
could atleast be credited with some originality with its love-via-chatting theme. But even that originality is missing in
Kaadhal Virus, which simply borrows the story from Sridhar's Nenjil Or Aalayam and sets it in the
cinema industry.
Deepak(Richard) had fallen in love with Geetha(Sridevi) in Cunnoor and she reciprocated his love too. But when he moved out
to write his first script, they lost touch completely with Deepak receiving no replies to his letters. The next time he met Geetha
was when she showed up at his house to give him an invitation to her marriage. Deepak is now a famous director;a man whose
films on love have been super hits. Rajiv(Abbas), a rich man who has forgone his wealth to pursue an acting career, begs Deepak
for a chance to star in his movie. Deepak soon learns that Rajiv's wife is none other than Geetha.
For a director, all of whose films have revolved around love, Kathir's handling of romance is rather shabby and shows no imagination.
The same is the case here. As Richard falls in love at first sight and Sridevi soon responds to his love, we get no sign of the
depth of their love. There are neither cute scenes that help us enjoy their romance or meaningful conversations that make us
understand their seriousness. In fact, the only character who makes an impression is Raghuvaran, whose conversation with Sridevi
is surprisingly mature considering the rest of the goings-on.
The rest of the movie is a collection of unconvincing characters indulging in acts that no sane person would attempt in the real world.
Would any film director ask an assistant to stab the movie's hero(with a fake knife, thankfully!) in broad daylight, just to see how the
hero reacts to the situation? The reason behind his act is that his spontaneous reaction would somehow improve his performance the
next day when he is supposed to be stabbed in the movie! Wonder how Kathir could come up with such an absurd logic when the
hero is a movie director!
As the movie proceeds, we realise that the whole movie relies on coincidences and its characters not speaking out at times when it
would be logical for them to explain things. The string of incidents where Sridevi misunderstands Richard's good intentions are downright
silly and the explanation offered for their lack of communication when he was in Chennai is absurd. There is also a disgruntled hero
who was dropped from Richard's movie who goes to the extreme. But that incident only lowers Richard in our eyes since his act of
abruptly dropping the hero to help Abbas does seem unfair to the hero.
Richard is definitely an improvement over Kathir's last introduction Kunal, but then anyone would have been an improvement over Kunal,
I think. While not particularly handsome, Richard is acceptable as the leading man here. His emoting needs some working but it is
only his first movie. Sridevi looks cute and is a tad better than Richard in the emotional scenes. Abbas is adequate. Vivek raises
a few laughs with the scene where he helps cover up a skimpily dressed woman being the pick. A.R.Rahman comes up with a
soundtrack leaning towards melodious rather than catchy. Sonnaalum..., Vaazhga Vaazhgave... and O Kaadhale...
all fall into the melodious category. Kaadhal Virus... and Vaan Nilaa... are fast and catchy though the picturization
for the latter, with its split screen and multi-colored frames, is disappointing considering its jazz sound.
